A Relationship between Microalbuminuria and Retinopathy in Patients with Non-insulin Dependent Disbetes Mellitus

Abstract
Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of visual loss in diabetes. Recently there were several reports that microalbuminuria could be predict early microvascular complications in diabetic patients. To evaluate the relationship between microalbuminuria and diabetic retinopathy in NIDDM, we measured microalbuminuria and compared to the presence of diabetic retinopathy.
The results were:
1) There was no significant difference in age, duration of diabetes, fasting blood glucose, HbAlc, serum creatinine and blood pressure between normoalbuminuric and microalbuminuric group.
2) Diabetic retinopathy was found in 62.5% (5 of 8) of diabetic patients with microalbuminuria and in 40% (8 of 20) of diabetic patients without microalbuminuria, but there was no statistical difference.
3) Of 13 patients with diabetic retinopathy, microalbuminuria was found in 38.5% (5 of 13) and of the 15 patients without diabetic retinopathy, microalbuminuria was found in 20% (3 of 15).
Above results suggested that microalbuminuria was not a single predictor for clinical diabetic retinopathy but it may help to find out the early changes of diabetic retinopathy if it is considered with other risk factors.
